The Homeless Prevention Council's (HPC) Backpack to School program met the increased need in the community this year by supplying 168 backpacks (a 20% increase from 136 last year) to students from 82 different families. Without the assistance of HPC, it would not have been possible for these families to provide these school supplies without affecting their budget. The filled backpacks ranged in cost, depending on the school grade, for an average of $110. Calculators, required by the high schools, can cost more than $125 each.
Volunteers, including staff from USI Insurance Services, filled the bags in August. Distribution was completed by the end of the month so students were ready for their first day of school.
HPC thanks the many individuals for their donations (money and products), to the United Way for grant funding and special thanks to Robert B. Our Co., Inc. our business sponsor.
